Details: Amazon.ca A small primary school lost in the depths of the Auvergne; one of those single-class schools where children from kindergarten to fifth grade, all from the same village, learn together; a teacher whose attention and patience are matched only by his serenity and passion for teaching… These are the main ingredients of Nicolas Philibert's documentary film, To Be and to Have (Être et Avoir). Following the rhythm of the seasons (the sumptuous landscapes, sometimes snowy and sometimes spring-like, perfectly symbolize the passage of time) and farm work (the hardships of farmers' lives are described in a few interludes), the director followed and filmed M. Lopez's thirteen students step-by-step for six months, exploring their doubts, difficulties, sorrows, and enthusiasm in turn as they learned traditional subjects, but especially the true values of life: patience, perseverance, humility, a taste for hard work, mutual aid, and respect for others, as well as conflict resolution… Through the vignettes that illustrate the children's daily lives, both at school and within their family circles, outbursts of joy and fits of laughter, born from the children's natural humor, alternate with moments of extreme emotion, such as a student painfully confiding the serious illness of his father to his teacher. Ultimately, one quickly becomes captivated by these little ones and by this splendid, fresh, and invigorating film, as enriching as it is entertaining, which will make many long for the happy, intimate, and carefree moments of primary school. --Frédéric Thorens
