Facing the Silence of the World
Author: Penelope
Release Date: 20-11-2001
Details: Amazon.ca To produce this punk rock album with Californian resonances, Quebec band Pénélope teamed up with American luminaries such as producer Dave Smalley (Down By Law) and guitarist Brian Baker (Bad Religion). Recorded in Washington, Facing the silence of the world brings together a dozen songs that stand out both for their very effective refrains and for their thoughtful, even philosophical texts (the title track is inspired by Albert Camus' Myth of Sisyphus). Smalley was able to capture in the studio the energy that characterizes Pénélope's shows and succeeded in highlighting the group's pieces thanks to discreet but relevant arrangements. Only a few weaknesses on the vocal side, especially in the more melodic pieces – where the lyrics would benefit from being sung rather than chanted – tarnish the picture a little. That said, this melodic punk rock, delivered with a personality and a Quebec accent, will find many fans. --Nicolas Houle
