Details: Amazon.ca The latest work from Brian De Palma, the most Hitchcockian of American directors, is a thriller with solid suspense, shot largely during the 2001 Cannes Film Festival. Starring Antonio Banderas and the statuesque Rebecca Romijn-Stamos, Femme Fatale is also a true exercise in cinematic stylization. A high-caliber thief and mistress of the art of lying, Laure knows how to use her physical assets to commit her misdeeds. But the game gets complicated when it comes to stealing a jewel-garment weighing nearly two kilos of pure gold, set with 510 diamonds, worn by an actress on opening night. A mannerist to his fingertips, Brian De Palma here summarizes all the cinemas he is fond of: that of Hitchcock, of course, but also film noir, the erotic thriller, or even the technological suspense film. While these incessant citations and omnipresent music may be annoying, his direction, all false appearances (though flashy and glitzy), has the merit of sparking curiosity. And Antonio Banderas' rather amusing performance does nothing to spoil the pleasure of being drawn into the meticulous schemes of this Femme Fatale. --Helen Faradji
