The album was first released on Virgin. Amazon.ca The Flying Lizards is not strictly speaking a group but rather the project of a single person, the British synth player David Cunningham plugged into experimental music – he will later collaborate with relatives of the new saxophonist Yorkers John Zorn, including Steve Beresford. His first eponymous album, produced in 1980, cultivates dada humor. We think of the Residents, in particular because of the covers that dot the ensemble, including "Summertime Blues" by Eddie Cochran and "Money", an amazing soul hit immortalized by the Beatles. Invigorating rhythms close to Devo, synths galore like Kraftwerk and strident high-pitched female voice are the hallmark of this record of which "Russia" is more than an echo of the Talking Heads and Brian Eno. Indeed, we can not help but think of the classic My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts. Singular and unknown, here is a classic of the sound of the 80's. --Philip Robert
