Details: Amazon.ca Back when he was the singer of Vancouver alt-rock band Pure, Jordy Birch loved to play the wise-ass. So it's little surprise that he keeps his tongue firmly wedged in his cheek on Jordy Birch's Fun Machine, his entertaining solo debut. The fuzzy rock sounds of Pure songs like "Anna Is a Speed Freak" are largely absent, replaced here by a sleek style that owes more to high-concept Britpop acts like Blur and Pulp. "Rock 'n' Roll Karma" cops its stomp from T. Rex, while "Hustlin'," the Daft Punk-y "Evoke" and the single "Moola Moola" all exhibit some previously uncharacteristic dance-floor savvy. Intricately designed for maximum pop appeal, Birch's Fun Machine is like some "narcotic digital paradise" (as a line from "Dope Changes Everything" goes). Of course, amid all this splendour, Birch can't resist the urge to make snarky remarks. In the buoyant "Moola Moola," he mocks those who love to live the high life: "You bought Led Zeppelin's airplane/it's a feather in your cap/say hello to your neighbours/with 50 Marshall stacks." Casual sex gets very casual in "Hustlin'," in which Birch makes the post-coital admission: "You've got that super-sexy afterglow/I had the magic, now it's time to go." Elsewhere, he gets dreamy for a girl named "Beatrice" and a self-styled "Astronette" who "plants flowers in clay pots." Produced by Birch and Todd Simko, his collaborator in Pure and After All, Jordy Birch's Fun Machine is a bright, bouncy showcase for Birch's witty songwriting. --Jason Anderson Product description Jordybirch's Funmachine
