Details: Amazon.ca "I don't know just where I fit in," rails Hugh Dillon on "Blowtorch," one of two new songs that open this collection. No wonder--the Toronto-based quartet has a sneering attitude lifted from Johnny Rotten, but the songs, most of which have been culled and remastered from the group's four studio discs, owe more to classic rock dinosaurs like the Who and AC/DC than to the Sex Pistols. Even the Headstones themselves, in the entertaining liner notes, use words like epic and bombastic to describe their music. Best, then, to simply call it rock and enjoy riff-monsters like "Cubically Contained" and "Unsound" on a purely visceral level as guitar chords explode, the bass rumbles, and the drums hammer everything home. Which isn't to say The Greatest Fits lacks for memorable lines--check out "If you're digging Gary Busey/You're living Buddy Holly" ("Come On"), "All your best friends are people you just met" ("Three Angels"), and "Walking hand in hand with my addiction" ("It's All Over"). And the band even achieves something approaching tenderness on the surprisingly affecting "Three Angels" and the Social Distortion cop "Blonde and Blue." It's just that, as this disc makes clear, the Headstones' greatest strength is balls-to-the-wall, all-out aggressive hard rock anthems like their razing of the Traveling Wilburys' "Tweeter and the Monkey Man" and the supercharged swing of "Smile and Wave." All killer and no filler (well, "And" and "Cemetery" are kind of redundant), The Greatest Fits is the perfect album for kicking back with a few brews after the game.
