Details: Amazon.ca La Pietà, a string ensemble directed by Quebec violinist Angèle Dubeau, has accustomed us to records including classical pieces and popular melodies, grouped under the same theme. With Violons d'enfer, it's the devil who leads the way: "Of all the instruments, the violin is undoubtedly the one that has most often been associated with the devil", the accompaniment notes warn us. The chosen works evoke the evil either by their title or by the unbridled expressiveness that often characterizes them: the "Danse macabre" by Saint-Saëns, the "Devil's Trill" by Tartini, the essential "Reel du diable", Paganini's "Caprice no 24" (arranged for the ensemble by its pianist, Louise-Andrée Baril), or the Rolling Stones' "Sympathy for a Devil Painted in Black" challenge the ensemble's virtuosity. The unit is good, and the high technical quality is there. On the other hand, the interpretations are not always as high and certainly not as "frenzied" as we would like. Nevertheless, we recognize the sound of La Pietà and its way of standardizing musical material coming from very different sources. A record that can be listened to without concentration. --Dominique Olivier
