Now 7 years old, Yanna was born from a free union between Véra the rebel and Zak the stranger, two lonely souls brought together by passion during their bohemian lives. An old, leaky-roofed cabin serves as their home, somewhere at the end of a country lane in the Eastern Townships. But in this Quebec of the late 60s, freedom is not looked upon kindly, especially by the teacher at the neighboring school who demands to see the little girl in his class as soon as the school year starts. Zak categorically refuses, wanting nothing but a free education for his daughter, far from state-sponsored brainwashing.

Things get complicated, however, when Véra hosts her parents for her birthday. At odds with her mother, who has never accepted her life choices, she finds very little comfort in her father, who is walled off in silence. Unable to take it anymore, Zak heads off to join his family in Toronto. He leaves Véra alone to face her mother's reprimands. Faced with this world of adults behaving strangely, the little girl observes and recounts the tragic events that are soon to unfold.
