Diving in the mean streets of Los Angeles, Training Day hinges on a pair of antagonistic cops. On the one hand a "blue", idealistic, armed with good feelings and a somewhat naive sense of the rule of law. It's Ethan Hawke- Welcome to Gattaca – which lends him his angelic and magnetic features. At his side, to support him, Denzel Washington – Hurricane Carter – embodies a real hothead who does not hesitate to cross the yellow line between the middle of the bad boys and that of justice. Short hair, goatee on the chin, he is more animal than the wolves he meets. An impressive metamorphosis, for which he won the Oscar for best actor in 2002. To account for the qualities of the film, it would also be necessary to point out the light of Mauro Fiore, who contributes to tipping this day of training little by little in the darkness of destruction; the veracity of the screenplay by David Ayer, a child from the neighborhoods he describes; the many supporting roles, of these broken faces that are Scott Glenn ( The Right Stuff) and Tom Berenger ( Platoon), to appearances by rappers Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg, to soul singer Macy Gray.
