Details: Amazon.ca Montreal hip hop group Muzion made a huge splash in 1999 with Mentalité Moune Morne… (Ils n’ont pas compris) and its unifying anthem "La Vi ti nèg". Three years later, J-Kyll, Impossible, and Dramatik deliver a second opus that is even more striking: J’rêvolutionne is not only one of the most successful Quebec albums of 2002, but certainly the most defiant and impactful of the bunch. Throughout the 14 tracks, the pot seems ready to boil over. Establishing themselves as the spokespeople for a Haitian community they feel is too often reduced to silence, the rappers launch a harsh and dark message, a reflection of the reality they themselves have faced. The trio raises their fists against the music industry, racism, violence, injustice, poverty, and globalization: the lyrics are imbued with a rage that can leave no one indifferent. Rapper J-Kyll, one of the few women in the hip hop scene, stands out clearly through the intensity of her performances and the strength of her compositions. The rhythms are pounded out from beginning to end, thanks to the solid production of brothers Martin and André Courcy. With touches of compas, rara, and zouk, Muzion also succeeds in creating a well-balanced mix of its Haitian roots and the modernity of its hip hop. There is no moment of respite throughout J’rêvolutionne, a rich and varied album that proves the group is at the height of its craft. --Frédéric Boudreault
