Details: Having only achieved success later on, once it was released on video, Gabriel Pelletier's Karmina is an unfairly overlooked film, a hilarious "Quebec vampire comedy." About to marry the vile Vlad (Yves Pelletier), Karmina (Isabelle Cyr), a beautiful young vampire, flees her native Transylvania and takes refuge in Montreal with an aunt (France Castel), who gives her a potion that allows vampires to become human for a while. The "vampirette" falls for a young musician (Robert Brouillette), but the despicable Vlad arrives at Mirabel airport, turns a customs officer (Gildor Roy) into a vampire, and sets off on the trail of his future bride. Things are going to get bloody!

From Polanski (The Fearless Vampire Killers) to Molinaro (Dracula and Son), vampirism and humor have often made a good match. Co-written, with dialogue by, and starring Yves "RBO" Pelletier, Karmina is a delightful film with an original plot, punchy humor, hilarious gags, and endearing characters. From Éric Cayla's cinematography to Patrick Bourgeois's music, including the costumes by Denis Sperdouklis, makeup by Pierre Saindon, and sets by Normand Sarrazin, every aspect of the film is impeccable. Under the confident direction of Gabriel Pelletier (After the Love), Karmina is a very successful (and all-too-rare in Quebec cinema) foray into fantasy comedy. --Éric Fourlanty
