Details: Amazon.ca It's not just Quebec singers who export well, comedians from La Belle Province too! The solo show, simply titled Kavanagh!, recorded at the Opéra de Massy, near Paris, demonstrates the extent to which the comedian of Haitian origin also knew how to conquer the French public. Adapted for France and directed by Pascal Legitimus (former member of Les Inconnus, a cult trio of French comedians), Kavanagh! is built in the American style, mixing monologues, imitations and songs. Although he is a talented noisemaker and imitator, Anthony Kavanagh does not yet have the finesse of Yvon Deschamps or the charisma of Eddie Murphy, fairly obvious sources of inspiration for his show. Very good features emerge – especially in the sketches on childbirth and adolescence – during this performance which could however have benefited from a more nuanced, less conventional writing. A 20-minute documentary, “Once Upon a Voice”, completes the DVD and reveals a funnier and more spontaneous Kavanagh. Although quite pleasant, this publication lacks that little something that sometimes makes it possible to consider humor as art. --Helen Faradji
