Details: Amazon.ca Ken Burns, the American filmmaker, has created a good deal of interest--and controversy--with his epic documentary, Jazz. This sampler from the 22-CD series associated with the film tackles the daunting task of representing some six decades of music in 20 selections, ranging from Duke Ellington's 1928 classic "The Mooche" to the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra's 1992 version of another Ellington orchestra tune , "Take The 'A' Train". Dizzy Gillespie's and Charlie Parker's "Groovin' High", Thelonious Monk's riff blues "Straight, No Chaser" and Miles Davis's modal masterpiece "So What" are among the greatest hits compiled here, while Louis Armstrong's down-home treatment of Hoagy Carmichael's "Star Dust" and Duke Ellington's rousing "Cotton Tail" show why they are the alpha and the omega of jazz. Aside from the instrumentalists that have dominated jazz, the diverse styles of Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan form a broad perspective on jazz singing. Although the documentary and this sampler omit the avant-garde and other important types of jazz, this is, overall, good one-stop shopping for those just getting into the groove. --Eugene Holley Jr.
