Details: Amazon.ca Kubrick's third film proves the filmmaker's complete originality. The Killing is the story of a racetrack heist, which in itself is nothing original. But the construction developed by Kubrick details the day of each protagonist in succession, leading up to their involvement in the heist. Combining cross-cutting with a linear voice-over narration, Kubrick constructs a complex puzzle that organizes and disorganizes itself as the film progresses, revealing the personal stakes of each participant. Despite polished black-and-white cinematography, a femme fatale, and a brooding Sterling Hayden as the central character, The Killing breaks from the classic form of film noir and unveils Kubrick's innovative style. --Christophe Gagnot
