Details: Amazon.ca Although his legacy now seems overshadowed by those of Coxsone Dodd and Prince Buster, the flamboyant ex-cop Duke Reid was a mighty force in Jamaican ska and rock steady. His flamboyant style dominated dancehalls from the '50s through the '60s. His Treasure Isle output included classics like "The Tide Is High," "Queen Majesty," and "Ali Baba." Knock Out Ska is one of two Heartbeat sets in 2001 hoping to restore Reid's rep by dusting off rarities and unreleased tracks, and what a swinging document it is. There's extraordinary ensemble playing throughout the disc, highlighted by the work of Skatalites band leader Tommy McCook and celebrated trombonist Don Drummond on tracks like "Knockout Punch" and "Cool Smoke." Baba Brooks' instrumental version of "La Bamba," called "Twilight Zone" here, also stands out. There are spirited vocals by Stranger Cole on the bawdy "My Pussy," Alton Ellis on "Don't Trouble People," and Justin Hinds on "Penny Reel." If there was ever any doubt about Reid's power to move, Knock Out Ska will shake it away with a quickness. --Jeff Chang
