Details: Madeleine (Monique Mercure), 72, decides that she will not impose the misery of her illness on those she holds dear and that she will not survive her own loss of consciousness. Too proud to endure her degeneration, and loving her children and friends too much to force them to take care of her during this terrible ordeal, she makes a plan to end her life. Before doing so, she wants to embark on a small farewell tour, see her loved ones again, and savor a few landscapes that have particularly touched her one last time. She hires Zoé (Suzanne Clément), a 35-year-old musician met by chance who seems to be going through a difficult period, as her driver. La Brunante tells the story of the long trip these two women take from Montreal to Percé. The film traces the initiatory journey that Madeleine and Zoé embark upon without realizing it. For the progression of Madeleine's illness as well as the journey itself will force an intimacy between them. This intimacy in turn will lead to startling revelations for both. They will learn from one another to see things from a different perspective and will change their perceptions of love and what constitutes their reason for living. La Brunante offers an emotional, psychological, and ultimately spiritual adventure with the fundamental goal of questioning the mystery of life and celebrating its splendor.
