Details: Amazon.ca After the immense public and critical success won by 8 Women, François Ozon, one of the most daring young directors of French cinema, offers Swimming Pool, a true English thriller, where Ludivine Sagnier and Charlotte Rampling engage in a face-to-face -quite captivating face. Sarah Morton (Rampling) is a writer out of inspiration. Cynical, disillusioned, she gladly accepts her publisher's offer to go and rest for a while in the dream house he owns in the South of France. The novelist gradually regains her peace of mind when her boss's daughter, Julie, with her exalted way of life, arrives. Relying heavily on the contrast between the personalities of its two heroines (the sophisticated cerebral and the excessively eroticized Lolita), Swimming Pool is one of those films where the atmosphere is itself a character. Luxury, calm and voluptuousness coat the games of fascination-repulsion of the two women, while an insidious suspense hovers over all their actions. The extremely elegant and serene realization, as well as the harmonious palette of colors used, make the staging a refined setting for Sagnier and Rampling, both absolutely fantastic. As skilful as it is confusing, the end of the film tends to leave the spectator, caught up in the rest of the suspense, in complete disarray. – Helen Faradji.
