The Tar Angel

Details: Amazon.ca After the resolutely social tone of Clandestins, his first film, Denis Chouinard reiterates the same questioning in L'Ange de tar, this time with more ambition and budget. The filmmaker stars Raba Aït Ouyahhia, leader of the Quebec hip-hop group Latitude Nord, as well as Zinedine Soualem, Cédric Klapisch's favorite actor. Fleeing the Algerian civil war, the Kasmis settled in Montreal. Close to obtaining Canadian citizenship, their plans are compromised by the involvement of their 19-year-old son, Hafid, in an activist group. With the latter's girlfriend, the father will try to understand Hafid's choices while testing the limits of the "Canadian dream". Through the confrontation between snowy Quebec and the religious roots of this family, Denis Chouinard paints a strong portrait of the immigration situation in Canada. A mind-blowing direction of photography, which plays on the shadows, further adds to the dramatic tension, which is reminiscent of that which Mathieu Kassovitz was able to create in La Haine. Despite a badly paced start, L'Ange de tar upsets our conceptions of commitment, justice and honor, and thus proves to be a particularly necessary film. --Helen Faradji
