Details: Product description The Last Samurai (Full Screen E Amazon.ca The fascination of Western filmmakers for moral righteousness, pugnacity and the particularly strict code of honor of the Samurai is not new. It is now Edward Zwick's turn to take an interest in it, in the great epic fresco The Last Samurai, starring Tom Cruise. Captain Nathan Algren is a cynical and disillusioned Civil War hero. In 1876, Japan, then eager for outside knowledge, hired him to train the Emperor's army. But soon this army will have to face the Samurai, rebels at the new economic turning point of the country. Algren will be kidnapped and held captive within a community from which he will learn more than he hoped. Even if one could fear a Hollywood look at the Samurai, it is clear that the director immerses us in the universe of these warriors with ancient traditions without contempt or condescension, making his film a heroic and chivalrous saga quite involved. Despite an outrageous musical coating and use of flashbacks, the breath-taking staging magnifies the sublime sets and costumes of ancestral Japan. Many documentaries complete the presentation of the double DVD. As for Tom Cruise, whose shoulders are a little too narrow to support the ambition of such a project, he still delivers an honorable performance. –Helen Faradji
