We already knew that the sextet from Quebec took great pleasure in hybridization. With this third album, they demonstrate all the rigor they bring to their art by integrating not only rap, rock, ska, metal, or techno into traditional music, but by sometimes blending more than one genre into a single track. Undeniably bold, the musicians multiply discoveries and technical feats to achieve their ends. Fred Lebrasseur's drumming is a true storm, Andrée Bilodeau's violins are highly precise, while the saxophones and flutes of newcomer Jocelyn Guilmette allow them to brilliantly explore the territories of world music and jazz. Quebec folklore, which was originally intended to be very simple, thus acquires an impressive complexity with Les Batinses. Sometimes bordering on a dense, even scholarly "art rock," the songs on L'Autre Monde might frighten fans of traditional music.
