Details: Amazon.ca Acclaimed by critics, crowned with an Oscar for its female interpreter and carried at arm's length by its main actor, The Monster's Ball (Monster's Ball) is one of those films that surprises with its harshness. Director Marc Foster immerses us with this story in an ocean of pain. In the sweaty southern United States, Leticia (Halle Berry) falls in love with a man she meets while rushing her obese son to the hospital, who turns out to be responsible for the execution of her husband. This man, Hank, is Billy Bob Thornton, one of the most surprising actors of the moment. Thornton plays with restraint, a style in which he excels, as he had already proven in The Man Who Wasn't There, by the Cohen brothers. He is the cornerstone of this drama where sticky atmosphere, paralysis of feelings and daily racism are carried by the acerbic imagery of Marc Foster. Thanks to a nervous realization, a completely opportune sense of ellipse and a fully mastered cinematography, Foster's first feature film is a fairly accomplished work, despite an abrupt end and Berry's sometimes hysterical acting, which clashes with the whole. Monster's Ball is still a hard, choppy film, depicting daily life without makeup while paradoxically character beaten by life. --Helen Faradji
