Details: “Le film,” the new album by Philippe Katerine, is unconsciously a return to his roots: to that makeshift minimalism that, at the time, deeply and lightly reset the French chanson. This new album is composed of 16 songs, which he sang at the top of his lungs and improvised while driving his car during a fantastic journey across France; songs that he finally chose to record in the studio, in the order they appeared in his head, like so many scenes from a film... Obviously, touching, burlesque, and intimate. In the credits, Katerine on piano, accompanied by his accomplice Julien Baer. It is a singular record, with a Katerine who is focused and relaxed, sometimes recalling the forgotten chansonniers from before pop, or even the French melodies from before the Great War. On this tenth album, Katerine now sings the way he draws (he illustrated the cover himself, as well as each song on this new record); the vocal line takes flight freely but remains precise, sharp, and clever. This album, a mental film for the ears, constitutes a new, strong gesture, radical but open to everyone.
