The Bougon family is a clan of merry little scoundrels completely on the margins of society, likable, who go to great lengths to scheme, to prepare all sorts of "clean" little rackets in order to avoid working and never conforming. The Bougons are dropouts from the system who no longer believe in people; they are vultures who seize everything that society produces in excess. They are dirty, vulgar, dishonest, complaining, uneducated... but happy. The ardor and resourcefulness they put into screwing the system that would screw them if they weren’t vigilant is a sight to behold. The general indifference of the population and institutions is the loophole through which they sneak to collect the loot. Hunted by this justice system invented by and for the few privileged people it suits, the Bougons multiply their lies, grease the right palms, and remain united by their lifestyle. The Bougon family lives in a large 7 1/2 on the second floor of a duplex. Their apartment is in unimaginable disarray. The Bougons are a kind of five-cent Corleone family. This family solidarity, sometimes put to a severe test, is the driving force behind every one of their actions. For the rest, it is a life much closer to raw human nature: hunting, bartering, survival, but above all, freedom. Deep down, they do what some viewers say to themselves out of spite: "Why work when you can make more dough doing nothing?" In reality, however, their existence is a thousand times more complex than if they simply found a little honest job... The Bougons have sarcasm for breakfast, mockery for lunch, and cynicism for dinner. And their meals are never seasoned with scruples...
