Details: Amazon.ca Unable to console herself for the loss of her husband and her 16-year-old son, who died in a car accident, Marie is looking for a son. She puts an ad in the newspaper. But will the four young men she meets really be able to erase her wound? For her first directing experience, Quebec actress and singer Carole Laure plants her camera in the heart of Montreal. She concentrates all of her remarks on the exploration of the ambiguous relationships of Marie (Carole Laure) with her four “sons” (Jean-Marc Barr, Félix Lajeunesse, Danny Gilmore and Daniel Desjardins). Unfortunately, the actors sometimes lack naturalness, and the film suffers from a serious problem of rhythm. The Sons of Mary is especially worth for the finesse with which the director exploits the tears and the emotional lack of the characters. Selected for Critics' Week at the Cannes Film Festival in 2002, Les Fils de Marie is in line with the “artisanal” productions that Gilles Carle would not deny, of which Carole Laure was once the muse. --Helen Faradji
