Details: Amazon.ca In the summer of 2001, René-Richard Cyr was adapting for the boards The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Jacques Demy's immortal film which, in 1963, revealed Catherine Deneuve on the big screen and Michel Legrand in composition. From this musical, featuring young talents Évelyne Gélinas and Renaud Paradis, was born a refreshing soundtrack, recorded at the Morin-Heights studio under the direction of pianist Benoît Sarrasin and cellist Jeanne de Chantal Marcil. In a more intimate style than that of the soundtrack, the Quebec duo charms us with its delicate shimmering notes, its melancholic caresses and its accomplice repartee. Thus stripped down, pieces such as "Les Adieux à Élise", "Sur le quai" or "La Lettre de Guy" can be listened to here with delicious casualness, even if the melancholy is never far away. Integral and touching. -- Claude Cote
