Details: In the midst of the winter turmoil, Ursus, a colorful showman, collects in his trailer two orphans lost in the storm: Gwynplaine, a young boy marked on the face by a scar which gives him a permanent kind of laugh, and Déa, a blind girl. A few years later, they travel the roads together and give a show in which Gwynplaine, now an adult, is the star. Everywhere we want to see "The Laughing Man", he makes the crowds laugh and moves. This success opens the doors of fame and wealth to the young man and distances him from the only two beings who have always loved him for what he is: Déa and Ursus. A carnival boss (Gérard Depardieu) rescues two orphans in a winter storm - a beautiful, blind girl and a boy whose face is deformed by a scar that makes him look as though he's constantly laughing. They travel together for many years performing a show in which the boy is the star - people come from everywhere to see The Man Who Laughs. As he becomes famous and rich, he gradually grows distant from the only two people in the world who love him for what he is.
