Details: Amazon.ca Lionel Hampton was the vibraphonist who stamped his authority on the jazz scene of the 30s and 40s, it was Milt Jackson in the 50s and 60s and from then on Gary Burton has had a clear lead at the front. In Burton's playing the percussive approach of Hampton and Jackson was softened and the melodic qualities of the instrument were expanded. In Burton's hands the instrument has become elegant. But of course it still swings. This 1999 set finds him playing tangos in the company of a group of Argentinian musicians. The 2/4 time rhythms of the tango, which first emerged 100 years ago, have recently become fashionable again, and this stimulating album shows why. Burton has used the form to open up a new dimension in his playing and he blends into the music with gusto. He has worked with tangos for years and the interplay between the Argentinians and the vibes is something to wonder at. Burton doesn't try to steal the show, but he does solo at length on the remarkable "Fugata" with the band building powerhouse riffs behind him.
