Details: Amazon.ca One thing is clear when listening to the album Live by Jorane: the dreamlike universe of the musician takes on a new dimension on stage. The singer-cellist indeed moves away from the contemplative, even meditative tone of her first two records and favors a sometimes astonishing ardor and power, which contrasts with the "new age" label that some have affixed to her work. If his vaporous singing always evokes the vocalizations of Tori Amos, his interpretations testify more than ever to an artistic approach and a rigor which are specific to him. Accompanied by a troupe of competent musicians, Jorane masters the atmosphere. She knows how to turn a naive or bantering chant into drama and manages to create remarkable rises in intensity. The pieces from the 16 mm album thus find a most interesting second life there, while her new creations – because the prolific cellist presents some of them – are instantly seductive. Three studio recordings extend the pleasure of this generous opus: an unreleased one, "Desert Road", and two pieces written for the cinema (including "Silence", which can be heard in the film Unfaithful, by Adrian Lyne). A real little happiness. --Nicolas Houle
