A jazz inspired by traditional music cultivating a subtle balance between pure energy and contemplation.

The Oumigmag is first and foremost “the musk ox” in Inuktitut, a distant and mysterious animal that lives on the edge of reality near the Arctic Circle. It is also five seasoned and inventive musicians brought together by the composer, poet and guitarist Sébastien Sauvageau since the spring of 2015. Their search: to be inhabited by the strong force of the Oumigmag. A force that lies between contemplation and spontaneous gesture. Their musical and poetic universe is rooted in traditional music and contemporary jazz. Whether in the finely composed moments or the fiery improvisations, the soul and the heart meet for a unique moment of music.

The Oumigmag was created by Sébastien Sauvageau while he was finishing his studies in composition. Territoires, “a veritable piece of musical poetry” according to Ici Musique, which places it in the top 5 jazz of the mid-year, was warmly welcomed by the public and earned rave reviews (All About Jazz, Journal de Montréal).

In 2017-2018, the group toured Quebec and won the Public's Choice Award at the Festi Jazz international de Rimouski. The ensemble also presents mediation workshops in CEGEPs. In 2019, the group renews itself and welcomes violinist David Simard , drummer Olivier Bernatchez and drummer/percussionist Tom Jacques, thus opening up all new sound perspectives. They are CALQ and CAC scholarship holders for the research, creation and production of Habitant , an audacious double album.
