Two years after the highly acclaimed Salt Rain, the Anglo-Indian singer unfolds a thousand new spells, born from the delicate cross-pollinations she asserted on her first album. The natural thread of these compositions, illuminated by the glowing dawn, is woven by drummer Tony Allen, who lays down his versatile yet always firm tempos. Susheela Raman's delicately muted voice becomes purposeful, or at times incantatory, amidst an implacable groove ("Manasuloni"). The singer's idea, with the complicity of producer Sam Mills, remains that of reaching from the tip of Spain to the Horn of the Orient. Recorded at El Cortijo studio, Love Trap welcomes a ray of flamenco with pianist David Dorantes, and even melodies as marked by Indian tradition as "Sakhi Maro" resonate with Hispanicity. Miles away from catch-all world music, Susheela Raman invents a language of eternity. --José Ruiz
