Details: Amazon.ca Depending on whether you ask Jeff Mills or Norman Cook, a dance record may ultimately be rated by either its purity or its sense of play. Judging from their new record, it's pretty obvious that Layo Paskin and Matthew "Bushwacka" B side with Fatboy. One doesn't hear Low Life and think, "What an admirable adherence to the tech-house tradition!" It's more like, "Wow! What a party!" Mr. C's End Sound System stalwarts have produced a record as global and eclectic as their DJ tour work. "Chapter One" sneaks, skulks, and struts its way into "Spooked," in which icy strings sail over the top of a kick drum that sounds like a wet potato chip. The modern percussive maelstroms of "Dead Man Walking" and "Bad Old Good Old Days" segue into smoother house workouts, such as "Deep South" and the title track, only to land back in the land of the drums with the very literal take on the term "tribal" in "Kusekhaya." The closing third of the record dabbles in contemplative breakbeat and even a little sonic weirdness reminiscent of one of Underworld's more ambient pieces. Gorgeous, groovy, inventive-- Low Life is all of that. --Bob Michaels
