Details: Amazon.ca She was first known as a backup singer on Éric Lapointe's album Mon Ange. Mélanie Renaud should now carve out a place of her own with Ma Liberté, a highly successful first effort. The Montreal singer, barely 20 years old, stands out from other performers her age, delivering her infectious blend of R&B, soul, and pop with astonishing poise. One is quickly charmed by this warm, powerful voice, which can nevertheless turn very soft on more touching tracks ("J'm'en veux", "T'es plus mon ami"). The young woman sings of painful loves with a conviction that is a refreshing change from the insipid ballads usually played on the radio. In addition to being a formidable performer, she wrote three of the album's lyrics, including "Bon Dieu," a lovely song about a breakup. Her impressive team of songwriters and musicians—Jim Corcoran, Éric Lapointe, Roger Tabra, and Sylvain Cossette on lyrics, Éric Létourneau and Stéphane Dufour on music—also concocted pieces that fit her fiery character well. Without a doubt, we will have to keep a very close eye on this Mélanie Renaud… -- Frédéric Boudreault
