Details: Amazon.ca After disappearing for no less than eight years, Édith Butler makes a comeback with a completely revised musical approach. In Madame Butlerfly: Légendes intemporelles, she provides a decidedly modern coating to songs that are decades, if not centuries, old, thanks to the contributions of Catherine Lara and Thierry Eliez (Deep Forest) on arrangements and production. However, beneath the many layers of synthesizers and drum machines that invariably recall Lara’s Aral project, one realizes that Édith Butler has remained much the same and that this musical turn, halfway between new age and electro-pop, is not very well managed. The boisterous Acadian seems to suffocate under the mass of electronic sounds drenched in annoying reverb, in this hodgepodge of world music where tracks like "À la claire fontaine," "L'Enfant au tambour," and "Wing tra la" get lost. This aesthetic choice, which distorts Butler’s work more than it updates it, unfortunately tarnishes what could have been a beautiful comeback, as the lady is still in fine voice and knows how to interpret these pieces with sensitivity. --Nicolas Houle
