Following a bloody confrontation between her clan and the "people of the land of ice," Maïna, daughter of the great Innu chief Mishtenapuu, finds herself reluctantly entrusted with a mission that will change her life. To keep a promise made to her friend Matsii on her deathbed, she sets out on the trail of her enemies to rescue Nipki, the latter's 11-year-old son who has been captured by the Inuit. Taken prisoner in turn by Natak, the leader of the Inuit clan, she is brought against her will to the icy wasteland, where she is confronted with customs very different from her own.
