Details: Amazon.ca Writer and director of successful Quebecois comedies such as Nuit de noces, Emile Gaudreault continues his momentum with Mambo Italiano, his second feature film, a whimsical and colorful portrait of the Italian community in Montreal. In an Italian family, when a child leaves home, it means they are either dead or married. So, when 27-year-old Angelo Barberini leaves his parents and his sister Anna as neither, it's a tragedy. But the volume of screaming and tears can only increase once the Barberinis realize that Nino, their son's roommate, is much more than just a roommate. A true little treatise on tolerance that shatters a few prejudices, Mambo Italiano is a thoroughly refreshing comedy that smells of good tomatoes. Sunny, colorful, and lively, the film, which operates on the principle of parodic exaggeration, also knows how to be tender and moving when it evokes the difficult acceptance of the son's homosexuality by his overprotective family and the guilt-tripping community. A cheerful direction, spirited performances by Ginette Reno and Paul Sorvino as truly endearing parents, and often quite sharp dialogue made savory by the acting of Luke Kirby (Angelo) quickly make one forget the resolution that is brought about too quickly and the few scenes that border on caricature. – Helen Faradji.
