Abstract animation after McLaren
Rhythms, textures, lines, and spots are the protagonists of these nine contemporary abstract animated films. Playful or flamboyant, mysterious or unsettling, they stand out sharply in the current animation landscape. Beyond conventions and trends, the filmmakers of Matières vives approach animation in the spirit of the visual arts, working with the material to free it from the illusion of reality. These artists also share the fact that they have made films for which they established privileged and unique relationships with music. The variety of sound goes hand in hand with the visual variety, and if there is one cliché that Matières vives shatters, it is that all abstract films look the same.
