MAX WEBSTER - UNIVERSAL JUVENILES
Brand: Import
Release Date: 25-10-1995
Details: From Amazon With the words "Featuring Kim Mitchell" emblazoned in bigger letters than the band's name on its cover, it couldn't have been tough to figure out back in 1980 that Max Webster's fifth studio outing, Universal Juveniles, would also be their last. The only original member left in the Sarnia, Ontario, cult favourites by this point, Mitchell seemed to be priming himself for the successful solo career that would follow in the '80s. It's a characteristically playful album, full of upbeat musical party tricks that are doused with Mitchell's dizzying guitar flailing and high-pitched holler. That bravura is pitted awkwardly against some painfully flat keyboard sounds (original keyboardist Terry Watkinson had dropped out by this point). Still, the herky-jerky, almost mathematical flash of tunes like "In the World of Giants" and "Juveniles Don't Stop" sounds bold even by contemporary standards, while the Rush collaboration on "Battle Scar," featuring an unmistakable vocal turn by Geddy Lee, is a high point. At its best, Universal Juveniles is goofy prog-metal. At its worst, it's goofy prog-metal. Either way, the album remains, like everything else Max Webster did, a unique Canadian rock curio. --Kieran Grant Product Description Canadian heavy metal in the spirit of Rush, who make guest appearances on this recording. This is Max Webster's penultimate release before their untimely break-up in 1981. Features the tracks 'In the World of Giants', 'Check', 'Drive & Desire' & seven more.
