Who doesn't know "Chase", the eight-minute-twenty-six instrumental piece that has now become a classic? But to sum up the soundtrack of Midnight Express as such would be simplistic. Giorgio Moroder, high priest of disco, talented producer for too long despised and mentor of Donna Summer ("Love To Love You Baby", the sex anthem of the diva, it's him), perfectly knew how to restore the oppressive atmosphere from the film by Alan Parker. Like a wizard behind his machines, he has concocted a suffocating musical menu made up of distressing synthetic pads and explosive sound effects. Fortunately, David Castle and Chris Bennet, the guest singers on the only two vocal tracks on the album, offer us a light moment of plenitude, a sort of island in the ambient cacophony. Some have found Moroder's work kitchissistic. When we know the influence that the latter had on a good part of the techno house scene today, we can only refute this hasty opinion.
