Details: In 2001, after already a few years as an active musician with independent groups on the Montreal scene, Serge Nakauchi Pelletier (guitarist, audio and video artist) gave birth to his own project under the name of Pawa Up (after a sample from an old Japanese anime series). The project is devoted solely to "home" recording and only involves a computer, synthesizer and guitars. The music is found on discs but in very limited quantities. Two years later, with enough material and ideas accumulated, Serge decides it's time to take the mini project to the studio for real recording sessions with “live” instrumentation. He then turned to a longtime friend, bassist and “tech” specialist: Mathieu Pontbriand. Together, they work on the few compositions more and then surround themselves with musicians and collaborators to record six songs, to which they add three remixed versions of songs taken from the original repertoire of Pawa Up to make a complete album. Entitled “The Scenario,” the nine-track disc serves as an introduction to the unique sound of Pawa Up (renamed Pawa Up First for the occasion)—an instrumental soundtrack wandering through elements of dub, electro, indie rock , with in the foreground guitar lines rich in melodies, reminiscent of the works of Morricone, on percussive rhythms and an undeniable instinct for hip-hop "grooves". "The Scenario" found support from Dare To Care Records for the official release of the disc in May 2005. The reaction was unanimous, the album received extremely positive reviews and ended up on numerous alternative radio charts across Canada in company of artists such as Bloc Party, Fourtet, Spoon and others. With new permanent members within the group (Christian Baang -piano, Steve Dagg -drums and Julien Sagot -percussion and spiritual guru of the group), Pawa Up First gives its first show during the 2004 edition of the POP MONTRÉAL festival and surprises several with the dynamism of his repertoire and the finesse of his playing. There followed a series of performances in well-known places in the city, such as the Cabaret, the Casa Del Popolo, the Latulipe and the Main Hall. With the addition of video projections and the occasional collaborations with local vocalists and MCs, PUF created a growing word of mouth that subsequently brought them to Abitibi for the Festival de Musique Émergente de Rouyn-Noranda, where they were invited to the closing show. The next stop is at the Drake in Toronto, where the group performs as part of the Toronto Film Festival and then, the following week, travel to New York City to perform at the famous annual "happening", the CMJ Music Marathon.
