Details: Product Description Gratton, Antoine Amazon.ca There's nothing outdated about Stevie Wonder and Steely Dan funk for Antoine Gratton. Cheerfully drawing on the genre to amalgamate it sometimes with rock, sometimes with electronics, the young singer gives birth to a music of his own, to which he grafts light and unpretentious texts. Listening to Montreal Motel, his first album, we have to admit that his approach gives good results. The Hammond organ, Fender Rhodes keyboards and wah-wah guitars blend perfectly with his vocal lines, tinged with joual. Gratton, who benefited from an excellent realization, delivers a dynamic pop and puts forward dense arrangements, inventive rhythms. Along the way, he allows himself a few adventures in the language of Shakespeare as well as an astonishing cover of "My blonde loves me", by Pierre Bertrand. We can criticize him for not having refined his poetry sufficiently or for giving in to an excess of sound layers and we may regret his unsteady voice at times, but we cannot deny that Montreal Motel is a well-made album, which entertains without detour. --Nicolas Houle
