Mozart: Requiem
Author: TOMOWA-SINTOW / VIENNA PHIL ORCH / KARAJAN
Format: Remixes included
Release Date: 07-10-1994
Details: Amazon.ca The profusion of images and anecdotes that surround it is striking proof of this: Mozart's Requiem is still one of the most popular pieces in his repertoire. The extremely romantic image of a feverish Mozart, haunted by death, ardently composing his own Requiem is still alive today. As for the "mysterious" sponsor, he is now clearly identified as Count Walsegg-Stuppach, a Freemason like Mozart, who wanted to dedicate a Requiem to the memory of his deceased wife. Left unfinished, the score was completed by a student of the composer, Franz Xaver Süssmayr, fueling a somewhat sterile controversy over the importance of the latter's contributions. The orchestration, from which the lights of the flute and the smoothness of the clarinet are voluntarily banished, accentuates the dark hue and the metaphysical anxiety of this terrifying masterpiece, quite far from any heavenly hope. Karajan imposes his height of view there, as well as the transcendent beauty of his orchestra and his choir. --Pierre Masse Product Description Anna Tomowa-Sintow
