Details: Back behind the camera, Clint Eastwood (Bird, Pale Rider) delivers an excellent film-noir-style thriller with Mystic River. Adapted from Dennis Lehane's novel by screenwriter Brian Helgeland, who had already flexed his pen for L.A. Confidential, the film brings together an exceptional trio: Kevin Bacon, Sean Penn, and Tim Robbins, the latter having notably received the 2004 Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role.

A former hoodlum turned quiet family man, Jimmy Marcus (Penn) lives a trouble-free life in the working-class neighborhoods of Boston, until his 19-year-old daughter is murdered. This tragedy ironically reunites him with two of his childhood friends: one, Sean (Bacon), who is in charge of the investigation; the other, Dave (Robbins), the prime suspect.

Presented on three DVDs packed with enriching bonus features (interviews with Eastwood and his actors, a tour of Boston led by Lehane, a documentary on the adaptation), Mystic River is a harsh film that plunges us into the heart of its characters' troubled souls. Psychologically well-developed and brilliantly acted, these characters are truly the backbone of the film, which also relies on restrained and meticulous direction. Finding an echo in Lehane's work for themes dear to him since Unforgiven (corruption, vengeance, responsibility), Eastwood delicately exposes the ravages of pedophilia and unfolds the narrative of this Boston tragedy with great mastery. – Helen Faradji
