Details: Amazon.ca Joni Mitchell's Night Ride Home, released in '91, assuaged fears that the mercurial songwriter might retire. It also got critics back on side after a pair of unfavourably received recordings--1985's Thomas Dolby-produced Dog Eat Dog, and her sparse '88 effort, Chalk Mark in a Rain Storm. Mitchell's confident, subtle, and relaxed stance moved some to draw parallels with '76's groundbreaking Hejira--considered by many to be her finest, most fully realized outing. One track in particular, "Come in from the Cold," seems to sum up Mitchell's artistic until then, albeit in the guise of childhood reminiscence. The innovative use of a cricket's chirping as the rhythmic anchor of the disc's title track provided some great anecdotal material. After the album's release, Mitchell shared the story of a frantic search to remove the offending bug from the recording studio. When those efforts failed, she and co-producer Larry Klein opted to go to tape, insect and all. The results, like so much here, are magical. --Chuck Molgat Product Description Mitchell, Joni
