While its pioneers, led by Erik Truffaz and Julien Lourau, have moved on to other horizons, and while Nils Petter Molvaer and Bugge Wesseltoft continue to happily explore its every contour, this group made its debut, bolstered by the production work of the legendary Miles Davis producer Teo Macero, to whom we also owe the discovery of the Lounge Lizards. The group describes itself as follows: "Nojazz is against jazz the way Sacha Guitry was against women: very close to." One could speculate at length... What remains are forceful interventions, primarily from the horn players, Philippe Sellam on saxophone and Nicolas Folmer on trumpet. Pascal Reva chooses his samples with taste—Buena Vista Social Club—while the others, bubbling with energy, are not to be outdone. A zest of electro, a touch of hip-hop, a few influences drawn from rock, and a sense of improvisation inherited from jazz: the formula is certainly well-known, if not clichéd, but it is effective.
