In There is Bugge Wesseltoft's and Sidsel Endresen's third album together and is not dissimilar to the previous two, though it is further on in the process that drives them. Recorded close on a decade ago now, they were made up of live improvisations of vocal and electronic keyboards plus studio duets mostly using acoustic piano. This album is closer to Endresen's album of a year or so ago for Jazzland, Undertow. It takes plenty of chances, both lyrically and musically, using poetry as a basis for music much of the time or skirting the borders of contemporary classical music of the astringent variety. The track "Hav" is a Wesseltoft solo piece that tackles the classical musical language of the late 50s and early 60s, but the very next track is a stark and moving treatment of Neil Young's "Birds". Some listeners may feel that this smacks of a pairing that finds it difficult to settle on an identity. Others may see this defect as a strength.
