Details: With his debut opus, Veni, Vetti, Vicci, the star of the Murderers crew established himself as a new rap pitbull, a raw nerve with a flow and themes a little too close to DMX. But since Rule 3:36, Ja Rule has found his identity: that of a gangsta crooner who excels in hip-hop soul duets. The recipe? A raspy, broken voice that blends with the velvet harmonies of Christina Milian ("Between Me & You") or Lil' Mo ("Put It On Me" or the sublime "I Cry"). Since you don't change a winning recipe, Pain Is Love continues in the tradition of the "thug" with a heart of gold. Of course, tracks like "The Inc" or "Smokin & Ridin" are enough to prove that Ja Rule perfectly masters dark, menacing rap. But once again, it is the duets that stand out: the one with Case ("Livin' It Up"), which skillfully covers a Stevie Wonder classic, and "Always On Time" with the delightful Ashanti. And surprisingly, even Jennifer Lopez outdoes herself on the "I'm Real" remix, a superb hip-hop soul ode inspired by a Rick James sample. Excellent, even if purists might hold back their enjoyment. --Julien Silk
