Author: André Gagnon

Details: Amazon.ca An artist as versatile as he is prolific, André Gagnon has been releasing instrumental albums for some thirty years, both in Quebec and on the international stage. In Piano solitude, the man once called "Quebec's little Mozart" revisits some of his hits ("Un piano sur la mer," "Photo jaunie," "Les Jours tranquilles," "Comme au premier jour") in a very understated format, as a solo rather than with orchestral accompaniment. Initially reserved for the Japanese market, the recording also includes four tracks that Quebecers have never heard before, including "Indian Summer" and "L'Amour rêvé." Fans of the pianist will be neither disappointed nor disoriented by this release. André Gagnon continues on his path, favoring simplicity and a very accessible approach, sometimes bordering on the conventional, but never descending into sappiness. For while he preferred to build a repertoire of compositions intended for the general public rather than the musical elite—as he would have been capable of doing—behind his playing lie great craftsmanship, technique, and sensitivity that distinguish him from all the "muzak" makers. --Nicolas Houle
