Details: Amazon.ca A summary album, Portraits compiles Jim Corcoran's best songs, revisited in an acoustic format. Accompanied by guitarist Pierre Côté and double bassist Daniel Hubert, Corcoran explores his repertoire with great finesse, bringing his songs back to life in fresh, stripped-down, yet sophisticated new arrangements. We thus reconnect with “Chair de poule,” where only the distortion-heavy bass lines recall the instrumentation of the original version, with “Perdus dans le même décor,” whose nuances and silences convey the intensity of the lyrics, and with “J’ai la tête en gigue,” which hasn't aged a day since it was created during the Jim and Bertrand duo era. Carefully produced and of excellent sound quality, Portraits is a retrospective that brilliantly testifies to the contribution of this wise original to Quebec music. -- Nicolas Houle
