take the time

Details: Amazon.ca Prends le temps marks an important step in Suroît's career. Released a few months after the sudden death of co-founder Alcide Painchaud, this album is an opportunity for the group to take a look at the path they have traveled and the one they now intend to take. Far from putting an end to their activities, the four musicians entered the studio with director Pierre Duchesne (Claire Pelletier, Richard Séguin). They took the time to pay a sober homage to their deceased friend in "1948-2002", a piece recounting the departure of a sailor, and gave life to an album which, although inspired by tradition, focuses exclusively on original compositions. In addition to Quebecois and Celtic folk accents, there are much more modern sound layers, from keyboards, programming work and rhythmic loops. Suroît does not reinvent folklore and has no claim in this respect. The troupe from the Îles de la Madeleine strives instead to deliver well-turned pieces, with honest lyrics, and does its job well, both on the sung tracks and on the instrumentals. The voices, more or less assured, and the musicians' sometimes overly conservative style prevent certain songs from reaching their full potential, but Prends le temps deserves no less attention. --Nicolas Houle
