Where many would have gladly been content to use the same old recipes, DJ Shadow devised a completely different approach, both emotionally and musically. The result, less funk-oriented, proves paradoxically more influenced by new wave; however, the technique employed—that flawless science of looping—remains the same and makes his "signature" immediately recognizable. Quietly, without any flashiness, Shadow establishes himself, much like Afrika Bambaataa long before him, as one of the masters of cut-up and sampling.
